Bladnoch, Scotland’s southernmost distillery, has announced the release of the fifth and final edition of its celebrated Master Distiller’s Waterfall Series. This grand finale, the Bladnoch Waterfall 05 2024 Edition, was unveiled at the distillery’s annual Waterfall Day festival on the 18th of May 2024.
A Journey Through Whisky Maturation
Curated by Bladnoch’s Master Distiller, Dr. Nick Savage, the innovative five-year Waterfall Series has been a remarkable exploration of whisky maturation. This series has highlighted the journey of Bladnoch’s bold Galloway spirit as it matures, developing unique flavours and character with each passing year.
Since its inception in 2020, each annual release in the series has showcased a unique maturation process. The journey began with Waterfall 01, featuring notes of lemon cake and dried apricot, indicative of its ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry cask origins. Subsequent editions saw the whisky further matured in a variety of casks, each adding new layers of flavour – from Oloroso sherry puncheons and port pipes to Hungarian Tokaji dessert wine casks.
A Rich Finale in Oloroso Sherry Puncheons
The final edition, Waterfall 05 2024, has been meticulously finished in second-fill Oloroso sherry puncheons, rounding off the series with a whisky characterised by a rich, sugary flavour profile featuring dates and nutmeg. This edition offers aromas of Christmas dates with dark treacle, a palate of sticky toffee pudding with floral nutmeg, and a sweet, warm finish.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Established in 1817, Bladnoch Distillery holds the title of the oldest privately-owned Scotch whisky distillery in the world. Known as the ‘Queen of the Lowlands,’ Bladnoch continues to hand-craft its whiskies using malt from British growers and pristine water from the River Bladnoch. The distillery, revived by Master Distiller Dr. Nick Savage and owner David Prior, remains committed to preserving its heritage and environmental sustainability.
