King Street Townhouse Hotel

Looking for a luxurious base in the buzzing metropolis of Manchester, TLE headed to King Street Townhouse. Home to a sixth-floor bar terrace, rooftop pool and a good design at every turn, we were in for a treat.

Ambience & Location

Just a 10-minute stroll from Piccadilly train station, King Street Townhouse is tucked away on quiet Booth Street. While reaching all of the cities best amenities is a doddle, the hotel itself feels calm and quiet compared to the buzzing atmosphere going on in the streets around it.

An Italian renaissance building, the hotel was designed by local architect Edward Salomons in 1872 when it was built for the Manchester Salford Trustees Bank. Today it’s decorated with local artwork, lashings of parquet flooring and plenty of fun nods, like the print of the Haçienda.

Check-in & Welcome

I arrived slightly early, with the intention of just dropping my bag off, but to my delight the room was almost ready. As I waited a few minutes, the friendly staff told me about the must see nearby neo-Gothic John Rylands Library.  They also booked a taxi and arranged a wake-up call for me, as my flight the following morning was at 7.30am. While this process seemed slick, unfortunately there was a mix-up and my own alarm didn’t go off and the wake-up call which meant my morning got off to a rather frantic start!

The Room

This baby grand hotel is home to 40 rooms and suites, each one uniquely decorated. The favoured colour palette is a sea of muted blues, greens and greys and there is a universal love of walk-in showers, plus free-standing baths in some rooms. All beds are dressed in crisp, white bedding and each room comes with little luxuries like a Nespresso coffee machine and Temple Spa toiletries.

I stayed in a Comfy Room, which boasted a super king size bed and walk-in bathroom. Having never stayed in a hotel room where you walk through the bathroom to access the room, it was a new layout to me.

The bedroom was decorated with an eclectic range of prints and artwork, which made it feel unique and the total opposite of a monotonous hotel chain. The bed itself was irresistibly comfy and the free-standing bath was the perfect way to unwind after a day exploring the city’s interesting streets. I was also treated to a plate of cookies and macarons, which was a charming and very sweet touch.

Spa

Up on the 7th floor you’ll find the Infinity Spa Pool, plus a steam room and relaxation room. I slipped on a robe and headed up to check out the views and they did not disappoint. Despite the chill outside, the spa pool was pleasantly warm and I was able to sit out admiring the views over the clock tower and spires of the Manchester Town Hall for around half an hour. It wasn’t busy on my visit and several other guests had drinks ordered and bought up to them, which was a great service.

Dining

The King Street Tavern restaurant serves up a range of classic meal, like steak and shepherd’s pie, cooked perfectly. I nipped in without a reservation at around 5pm for an early dinner and chose the cobb salad. It was just what I was after: fresh, vibrant and packed full of flavour. Afterwards I ordered the sticky toffee pudding which I was delighted to discover came with its own pouring jug of salted caramel. Despite being a fan of the latter, I couldn’t quite finish off the jug! In the morning, this is also where breakfast is served and guests can choose from a small buffet or order from a hot food menu.

Final Thoughts

For contemporary luxury in the heart of Manchester, book a room at King Street Townhouse and be sure to pack your swimming gear, the views from the rooftop pool are not to be missed. Just don’t forget to double check your alarm!
