Hotel Riu Palace Oasis – Gran Canaria Luxury

Set within landscaped sub-tropical, palm-filled gardens, evocative of an exotic North African oasis, the 5-star Hotel RIU Palace Oasis is a Maspalomas beachside hotel in the upscale resort area of Meloneras, Gran Canaria.

The Lobby of the Hotel RIU Palace Oasis

All 415 guestrooms and suites of the Hotel RIU Palace Oasis have been remodelled, and following the 5-star update, there are new swim-up rooms with private pools. Dining includes the Promenade, a sophisticated buffet restaurant with tables al fresco, set under the palm trees; Krystal Restaurant, offering signature fusion dining, and Botánico, for Spanish and Iberian specialities. There’s a spa & wellness centre, fitness area with gym, steam room and spa bath, and also three swimming pools (plus a children’s pool). The team offers superb hospitality led by General Manager Manuel Navarro de Cos, writes Andrew Forbes (The Luxury Editor).

Gran Canaria is the third largest island of Spain’s Atlantic volcanic archipelago, off the northwest coast of Africa. The islands are an all-year destination, with an international appeal, thanks not only to the glorious climate (often described as an eternal spring), but also for that winning mix of great beaches, spectacular nature, and a sophisticated hospitality infrastructure.

Hotel RIU Palace Oasis epitomises the new style of upscale resort that the Canary Islands has to offer visitors. Put aside any misconceptions of these holiday islands, as Gran Canaria and this stylish 400-room hotel are sure to surprise and impress.

This may be a large property, but the team are very friendly and professional. Gestures, like greeting you, remembering your name and being chatty really make you feel welcome and relaxed.

The Location – Maspalomas Beach, Meloneras

Meloneras is a new community that has grown up to the west of the striking and protected Maspalomas Dunes in the south of Gran Canaria, This vast area of sculpted sand leads down to the finest beaches on the island. With wide avenues, more space between properties and a focus on 5-star and Gran Lujo resorts, Meloneras has a different style and ambiance to Playa del Ingles.

This resort is close to the island’s landmark 1890s lighthouse. So, guests can expect some of the best sunsets on the island. In my mind, for a resort stay on Gran Canaria, this southwestern area is where one should stay for an elegant, more sophisticated island experience.

The Hotel – 5 stars and 1,500 palms

Hotel RIU Palace Oasis has undergone a multi-million euro upgrade, creating new facilities, guest rooms, and dining opportunities.

The main public areas convey style and extravagance. The lobby features a spectacular linear chandelier of hand-blown crystals of amber-coloured glass, made with sand from the area, and hung to echo the undulating waves of the famous dunes. The walls continue the theme of nature with crafted gilded flowers.

The gardens have been further enhanced with alfresco areas for cocktails, dining and entertainment. The spectacular palm grove also provides a beautiful setting for the swimming pools.

The Dining – Buffet & Restaurants

The Hotel RIU Palace Oasis half board packages where guests can enjoy an in-room or a buffet breakfast as well as dinner in the resort’s restaurants.

Promenade is a sophisticated and very comprehensive buffet restaurant with tables inside an elegant dining room as well as al fresco. I was impressed by the quality of the buffet options, with dishes full of flavour, carefully prepared, and beautifully presented.  Mediterranean Spanish and Italian dishes, as well as seafood, fish, meats on the grill, and vegetarian meals.

Krystal Restaurant is an intimate space for a refined dining experience. Expect starters like mushroom ragout with poached egg and truffle; and main courses including a creamy lobster rice, or grilled duck breast in a spiced wine sauce with sauteed plantain.

Botánico is the Spanish themed restaurant located in the palm grove gardens, offering flavours from the peninsula, and the islands.

The Bars – Poolside and Lobby

The Palm Bar and Lido Lounge Bar mean guests aren’t far from a refreshing drink or holiday cocktail. The upscale Onix Lobby Bar sets the tone for an elegant evening on the resort.

The Rooms – Swim-Up, Family and Couples

I stayed in one of the new swim-up pool suites on the ground floor. Each room leads out onto a private terrace and plunge pool, a luxurious treat, and a more tranquil experience that’s perfect for a romantic break. The garden view creates an intimate setting.

Room and suite layouts vary from two double beds, one double bed, or two twin beds – offering flexibility for couples and families. Bathrooms are well equipped, with the expected 5-star amenities like slippers, robes, and amenities by Paul Gauguin.

Higher floor rooms have views of Maspalomas Beach and the landmark lighthouse. All share a minimalist style, with bleached wood, light walls and plenty of light.
