Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland and also my hometown. It’s a busy city and sometimes the hustle and bustle of the urban environment gets to be too much. If you are ready to set off a weekend adventure that embraces Scotland’s natural scenery as well as some truly luxurious accommodation, then a road trip up to Oban is just perfect.
Glasgow to Loch Lomond
The first part of the journey starts in Glasgow and takes you to Loch Lomond which is just 45 minutes away. Long before you get out of your car, you will be able to see the large body of water which is the biggest loch in all of Scotland. Loch Lomond is also a popular place for outdoor recreation, since it provides a stunning backdrop. You might want to start your sightseeing at Loch Lomond Shores, which is a visitor centre and information exhibition. If the weather is pleasant head along to Luss and walk along to the pier and reward yourself with lunch or a drink at The Loch Lomond Arms.
Cameron House Loch Lomond
After a day exploring the area around Loch Lomond, treat yourself to a luxury of Cameron House. This gorgeous historical manor is located right on the edge of the loch, and the views are phenomenal. The tastefully-decorated suites are ideal for relaxation, but don’t forget about amenities like the spa, steam room, golf course, fitness room, games room and rooftop pool.
Dig Into the Food and Attractions at Inveraray
After a relaxing night, get back behind the wheel for a stunning drive along Loch Lomond and over to Inveraray, before you reach Inverary it is worth going to Loch Fyne Oyster bar for a snack or visit in their shop. Once you reach Inverary you will feels centuries away from the large businesses and buildings of Glasgow, this town was Scotland’s first purpose built town which is visible from the towns architecture. Attractions in Inveraray include The Castle, Inveraray Jail, Cruachan Visitor Centre, the Maritime Museum and the Crarae Gardens.
Explore Oban
Oban is about one hours drive from Inverary and is best known for seafood and being the gateway to the islands. While you are there, you will definitely want to hike up to McCaig’s Tower for the views, tour the impressive Dunollie Castle and enjoy yourself at the Oban Distillery.
Accommodation Near Oban
Oban has some great accommodation nearby and there is nowhere better than the Isle of Eriska Hotel. As the name implies, this hotel is on its very own island. Don’t worry, though, because cars can easily access it thanks to a small bridge. East of Oban is the Ardanaiseig Hotel surrounded by stunning scenery and the water of Loch Awe, it is a wonderful place to soak up the natural beauty of Scotland. Sip a local malt in front of a roaring fireplace and get ready for more adventure tomorrow.
Return Drive to Glasgow via Glencoe and Fort William
When leaving Oban don’t leave without a short detour from Oban up to Fort William to take in the views from the base of Ben Nevis. Then, head back to Glasgow, but make sure to stop in at Glencoe along the way. Glencoe is home to some spectacular landscapes, and a quick hike through the valley is a great way to break up the drive back home to Glasgow.
For a luxury weekend, consider heading to Oban from Glasgow. The route is not long, but it is filled with incredible scenery, exciting attractions, delicious local cuisine and upscale accommodation.
